Stone Hill Winery’s Governor’s Cup, C.V. Riley Award, and Best of Class Winners

The results of the 2021 Missouri Wine Competition are in, and we could not be happier. Over 225 Missouri wines were tasted during the three-day competition, all vying for the esteemed Governor’s Cup, awarded to the best wine produced in Missouri. Ultimately, our 2019 Chambourcin was crowned the champion, receiving the Governor’s Cup and beating all other wines produced in the state!

In addition to the Governor’s Cup, we also went on to receive the second highest honor at the competition, the coveted C.V. Riley Award, for our 2019 Norton, awarded to the best Norton produced in Missouri. Our winery also won 40 other awards including 5 Best of Class and 14 Gold Medals! These wins are part of a long line of success for us at the Missouri Wine Competition, with this being our 13th Governor’s Cup Award, out of the 26 competitions since 1995, and our 6th C.V. Riley Award, out of the 10 competitions since its implementation in 2011.

Words cannot express how exciting the results of the 2021 Missouri Wine Competition were. I couldn’t ask for a better outcome. To win the C.V. Riley and the Governor’s Cup alone is an honor, but we had a remarkable showing with the rest of our wines as well. It is gratifying to be recognized for our commitment to quality-driven winemaking and viticulture, and it is thrilling to see our dedication paying off with excellent wines. I couldn’t be prouder of our team,” said Jon Held, President and Owner of Stone Hill Winery.

The Missouri Wine Competition, hosted by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board and the State of Missouri, invites all Missouri wine producers to compete head-to-head and gain recognition for their great wines. This year, eight industry experts from across the country judged the competition July 13-15 in Columbia, Missouri.

Over 225 wines were tasted with 10 Best of Class wine awards up for grabs, from which the Governor’s Cup winner is selected. We won the C.V. Riley Award for our 2019 Norton, Best of Class Sparkling for our Demi-Sec, Best of Class Semi-Dry White for our 2020 Traminette, Best of Class Semi-Dry Red for our 2019 Ozark Hellbender, Best of Class Dry Rosé for our Dry Rosé, and Best of Class Dry Red for our 2019 Chambourcin which ultimately received the Governor’s Cup for best wine in Missouri.

It is truly an honor to receive all this recognition from the Missouri Wine Competition for our hard work. Our vineyard and cellar crew did a remarkable job, along with Mother Nature’s good graces, which allowed us to make some great wines. The whole Stone Hill team came together to produce exceptional wines yet again,” said Shaun Turnbull, Head Winemaker at Stone Hill Winery.

Our cellar and vineyard crews were integral to our win, and we could not be more thankful for them! It was their work, along with the rest of the Stone Hill team, that made this big accomplishment possible. These wines will be released for a limited time throughout the year until official release later next year.
