Experience the nation’s largest series of cellars, the historic and little-known story about America’s wine origins, great German food, and our renowned wines.
Growing American and hybrid grape varietals uniquely adapted to Missouri allows us to create truly special wines, award-winning across every style, that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
When my parents set to work reviving our industry, they uncovered the forgotten history of a winery at the center of Pre-Prohibition American winemaking.
Founded in 1847 by German immigrants, Stone Hill Winery found international acclaim, with our Norton declared “Best Wine of All Nations.” Cut down in our prime with Prohibition, the winery sat dormant for 45 years.
Fortunately in 1965, Jim and Betty Held—two small farmers with less than $1200 in their bank account—decided to take a chance and restore the winery and reestablish Missouri’s wine industry. Today, our family continues as pioneers in the industry, setting the bar for quality.
Stay a While
The original winery barn houses the Vintage 1847 Restaurant.
We are dedicated to making German specialties like schweineschnitzel and kartoffelpuffer, as well as American favorites. If you are craving some great food when you visit us, make sure to check out our Vintage 1847 Restaurant.
Best winery in Missouri. Best well-managed and stocked wine-gift shop I've ever seen. This is a place that should be savored for visiting.

Went here for a wine tasting and it was an amazing time! You get a stemless wine glass with it which is awesome. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the specific wines and wine in general. He was super nice and helpful. The building and property itself is gorgeous. The wine tasting is in a building from the 1800’s so the environment is very cool. You get to select 6 choices from a menu with a ton of options from dry wines to sweet wines.

Our first Missouri winery experience and it was amazing! We were able to get in for a wine tasting right away. Our tasting associate did an amazing job! He was very personable and gave us recommendations. We went to 5 different wineries in town, and this one was my favorite! The wine prices are extremely reasonable for the flavor and quality. It is also located on a hillside so you can sit and have a picnic with a nice view with your wine. They even gave us wine glasses to keep with our tasting!! They also have a charcuterie fridge where you can buy a bunch of wine snacks.

The wines are wonderful, and the staff is even better. My friend was on crutches while we were there, and Noah (pouring for our tasting) immediately went and found her a chair. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wines and personable for chit chat between tastings. AJ and John-John found a golf cart so my friend could see the first part of their facilities tour (the best in Hermann). The staff was out of this world. Couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Stone Hill Winery is an amazing place to venture for first time wine drinkers. Shaun is head winemaker at this location, I had the great pleasure of meeting John and Kay during my wine tasting adventure. I was given history of the establishment and the years of the wines, including what I can pair them with. John was able to help me fine the wine that fit for me. I would 100% recommended Stone Hill Winery for all patrons, first time wine tasters and veterans alike.

I have been using Stone Hill Winery for my corporate celebrations for many years. It has certainly separated gifting from average to extreme. I utilize them for partners on special projects, colleagues that have stepped up to help meet deadlines. Most of all I use them for celebrating exceeding extreme sales goals. The custom packages allows me to tailor to any person or situation.
