Stone Hill Winery, established 1847

Hermann, Missouri | Est. 1847

A wine destination in the American heartland

Founded in 1847, Stone Hill is America’s most storied winery. Declared a National Historic District, our hillside is home to the largest underground cellars in North America. Taste our award-winning wines, hear the little-known story of America’s wine origins, and stay for great German food.

Our story

“Best Wine of All Nations.”

Founded in 1847 by German immigrants, Stone Hill Winery found international acclaim with our Norton. Cut down in our prime by Prohibition, the winery sat dormant for 45 years, until Jim and Betty Held took a chance on it in 1965, making Stone Hill the first Missouri winery to reopen after Prohibition and sparking the rebirth of Midwest and Missouri wine. Today, our family continues as pioneers in the industry, setting the bar for quality on grounds recognized as a National Historic District.

Defiantly growing an American tradition

Growing American and hybrid grape varietals naturally and uniquely adapted to Missouri allows us to create truly special wines, award-winning across every style, that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

What our guests say

Best winery in Missouri. Best well-managed and stocked wine-gift shop I’ve ever seen. This is a place that should be savored for visiting.

Mike D.

Hands down the best winery of the 5 that the trolley takes you to. I highly recommend doing a tasting to find what you like.

Hannah R.

The wine tasting is in a building from the 1800’s so the environment is very cool.
